ASUS EAX1600 XT Silent
The ASUS EAX1600 XT Silent 256 MB video card is here, and has quite an appealing price tag with a very full bundle. It speaks softly, but does it carry a big stick?
• After you save the file, you’ll be able to straight away run it on your computer that you will install the driver. Hp drivers mfp m177fw.
continued..Gameplay Summary
Oblivion
The ASUS EAX1600 XT Silent allowed us to run at 1024x768 with medium to low quality settings, and without HDR. On the other side of the fence, the NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT also ran Oblivion at 1024x768, but with much higher quality settings, and with HDR enabled. With those settings, framerates were just about dead even. The framerate parity and quality disparity in Oblivion clearly favors the 7600 GT GPU over the X1600 XT.
Battlefield 2
In Battlefield 2, the EAX1600 XT Silent allowed a resolution of 1024x768, high in-game quality settings, but no antialiasing and only 2x anisotropic texture filtering. Conversely, the GeForce 7600 GT allowed 1280x1024, high quality settings, 2x AA, and 4x AF. Even while running much higher quality settings, the 7600 GT handily outstripped the ASUS EAX1600 XT Silent in Battlefield 2, delivering about fifteen more frames per second, on average.
Half-Life 2: Episode 1
The situation in Half-Life 2: Episode 1 is similar to Battlefield 2. The EAX1600 XT Silent again allowed 1024x768 with high image quality settings, but also allowed 2x AA and 4x HQAF. The 7600 GT allowed the same settings, except the resolution, which we were able to take up to 1280x1024. Framerates were, like Oblivion, mostly evenly matched. The 7600 GT took up a very slight lead, also while maintaining a better image quality and gaming experience.
World of Warcraft
Like the other games in this evaluation, World of Warcraft ran well on the ASUS EAX1600 XT Silent video card. It ran at 1280x1024 with quality settings high, 16x AF, but with no AA and with the Full-Screen Glow Effect pixel shader disabled. The lacking pixel shader effect produced a flat looking image and the gameplay experience suffered. Dedicated World of Warcraft players could enable the effect, but will likely suffer a five to seven frames per second performance hit, which makes many parts of the game unpleasant to play. In contrast, the GeForce 7600 GT was able to run World of Warcraft at 1600x1200, with all settings maxed, including AA, AF, and pixel shader effects. Like with the other games, the 7600 GT was able to maintain a slight performance lead, this time about five frames per second, even with higher quality settings.
The Sims 2
The Sims 2 generally suffers the lower framerates than the other games in our evaluation battery. The ASUS EAX1600 XT Silent and NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT were no exception. With the EAX1600 XT Silent, we were able to run at 1280x1024 with detail settings high, no AA, no AF, and shadows disabled. 1gb nvidia geforce gt 610. The GeForce 7600 GT ran The Sims 2 at 1600x1200 with detail settings high, shadows on medium, and also no AA or AF. In exterior areas, the EAX1600 XT Silent provided better image quality due to the sharper texture filtering on the grass texture. Framerates again favored the 7600 GT, which ran at higher resolutions and still commanded a slight lead, but this time not with superior image quality. Quality favored the EAX1600 XT Silent on this game, but at the expense of a lower playable resolution.
Value
You can purchase the ASUS EAX1600 XT Silent video card for $148.99, and the NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT can be had for $132.99 and up. The $16 USD price difference isn't huge, and is easily accounted for with the excellent bundle that the ASUS video card offers. It comes with four full-version games and a nice VIVO dongle. However, the performance just isn't there to provide an oustanding gaming experience, which makes this video card difficult to recommend, especially when a cheaper video card can do more.
ASUS EAX1600XT Silent Summary
Except for The Sims 2, the games in our test ran faster and looked better on the NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT video card than on the ASUS EAX1600 XT Silent video card. The GeForce 7600 GT consistently gave us higher resolution, better image quality, AND higher framerates. That easily translates to a better gaming experience than the EAX1600 XT Silent can offer.
The most important aspect that the ASUS EAX1600 XT Silent can bring to the table is silent operation. It has no fan, so it makes no noise. Potential HTPC users and gamers that like the quiet life may find that to be a compelling reason to take a longer look at this video card.
The Bottom Line
While there is nothing inherently wrong with the ASUS EAX1600 XT Silent, it comes at a price that should provide a better gaming experience, bundle notwithstanding. The NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT is readily available at a lower price, is more powerful, and provides a better gaming experience. Only those for whom silent operation is a supreme requirement should be interested in the ASUS EAX1600 XT Silent video card.
